Sheridan, Wy To Buffalo, Wy

July 12, 2010
40 miles
I made the mistake of thinking today was going to be an easy day as we did not have a lot of miles to cover.

Everyone slept in and had breakfast at the Trails End hotel in Sheridan around 8 a.m.

I rode with Dick, Tom, and Ed all day. Our hotel was located at the north end of town and rode south through downtown Sheridan. It looked like a nice place to visit and I wished we had stayed closer to downtown last night.

As we headed farther south we saw the typical larger stores including Walmart. There was also a Starbucks.

The weather was warm for morning as we passed rural homes with horse pastures. When we turned south on Hwy 87 we got a headwind and we also had to climb a number of hills. The biggest hill came when we had to go up to the town of Story on Hwy 193. Half way up we stopped to take pictures since there was a nice view to the north.

We were hoping to find a store at the top of the hill to get a cold drink but found none. At this point we felt that this short mileage day was actually harder than anticipated.

We had a downhill after Story but again, the headwinds slowed us down.

The only route to Buffalo at this point was on I-90. 12 Miles of freeway at 90 degrees made us a little concerned about tomorrow's ride to Gillette which will be entirely on I-90 (over 70 miles). But this stretch turned out to be not that bad.

When we arrived in Buffalo we went to the largest outdoor pool in the US. It was huge and was fed by fresh water from a river. The temps. felt like it was river water as it was in the high 60's. Later Ed and I walked downtown to the local library to blog and then to a historic hotel bar. Apparently many years ago there was a shoot out and the bartender showed us a bullet hole still visible in a wall.

We are staying tonight at the United Congregational Church in Buffalo.

Heading onto I90 south to Buffalo, but wait a minute- Is Dick going to take another 20 mile detour?
