Huron, SD to Brookings, SD

July 23,2010
77 Miles

Last night in Huron we had a great vegetarian pasta meal prepared by Sharon, Ziva, and Susan.

Today everyone woke up at 5:30 a.m. and had breakfast. I left with Susan and Ziva just before 7 a.m. We worked our way out of Huron going through the downtown area that we had not seen yesterday. As we left town we saw a large statue of a pheasant. It claimed to be the largest.

In the morning it wasn’t humid and there was no wind so it was perfect for riding. Today’s ride included passing through several small towns including, Covour, Manchester, DeSemt, Volga before reaching Brookings.

In Manchester we saw a memorial for the people who were killed by a very powerful tornado in 2003. Our lunch stop was in Lake Preston in the town park. DeSemt is the home of Laura Ingalls Wilder (The Little House on the Prairie).

We noticed many frogs on the road today. They were all over the place, mostly dead roadkill. My down tube, seat tube and brakes were covered in frog guts.

Near Arlington I stopped at a park and relaxed in the shade. I saw Tom ride by. He said everyone else is behind him.

Got into Brookings by 2: 30 p.m. and stopped at the local bike shop downtown. Ken was also at this shop checking out the new bikes.

Brookings is another South Dakota college town. It has a nice downtown with a few good coffee shops.

The people at the church prepared a great dinner for us and a number of there congregation ate with us. Later in the evening a strong storm rolled through knocking down lots of tree limbs around the church.
