Portage, WI to Fond du Loc, WI

August 1, 2010

68 miles

Last night at our nightly meeting Ken advised us that there may be dense fog this morning that could make visibility poor. We decided to leave the hotel in Portage around 8 a.m. so the fog could clear up. Once we started rolling out of town the fog had disappeared completely.

Ed and I jumped on the Levee Trail that followed the Wisconsin River for a few miles before getting onto Country Road P.

We followed P for several miles and came to an area with "road closed" signs telling us there is a detour.

Ed and I decided not to follow the detour sign and went straight through and had no problem. In fact, it was as if we had one giant bike trail with the road all to ourselves. Ed called others in the group to let them know that they did not have to take a detour.

We followed P through small towns like Pardeeville, Cambria, and Fox Lake.
At Fox Lake Ken treated us to anything we wanted at Mullins Drive-in. There were hundreds of other cyclists at the drive-in too. They were from Bike Wisconsin, a six day ride around Wisconsin.

After lunch Ken asked me to follow him and chalk routes that may be confusing to other riders. Tom decided to follow and the three of us were moving pretty fast. Ken is a faster rider than me or Tom and we struggled to keep up the pace. I was going through a lot of water as were Ken and Tom. Before we got to Fond Du Loc we stopped at a C store to get some drinks. Then it was only two miles to our home for the night, the Ramada Inn in downtown Fond Du Loc.

Since the hotel did not have washers Ed and I walked a couple of blocks north to a bar called "Shooters" that had a laundromat inside. It was strange to have to walk through a bar to get to the machines.

In the evening I took a walk downtown and met up with Sharon and Kim. The three of us ended up eating at a sports bar for dinner.

After our nightly meeting we celebrated Blaine's birthday in the lobby of the hotel.
